How is it a few Swedes - known for producing pop hooks and catchy songs, channel Elliot Smith more effectively than I’ve ever heard? Elliot Smith could put the brightest day into perspective with one chord change. Music is good like that - it transcends.
It goes beyond culture and class and education and wealth. That’s what I love about technology it transcends everything too. It always makes me laugh to see over-monied top heavy start-ups lumber into a space after being in “private beta” for a year. Akin to the $100K short films that are closer to a polished turd than a short story.
My father comes to town this Saturday next, along with my younger brother. I’ve stopped calling him little now that he’s 23 - and not small. Shorter than me by a half inch, but not little.
We hold onto these odd constraints in our lives, and we play these strange roles because they’re “the devil we know” but for me a life of the known - even optimally lived - isn’t good enough. I think the explorer’s new map is culture, their new ships are art and technology, and their new wealth is ubiquity and the ability to create wealth while remaining grounded in egalitarian principles.

Someone called me a cowboy the other day and it made me cringe out of irony and pity. Irony from wearing a western shirt - snaps and all, pity, because she’ll probably never meet a real cowboy, or understand the roots of our Nation. From Cowboys to Miners, to Mill hands and Farmers, our trades and our roots are evaporating. Our only hope is that the same work ethic and ingenuity can be instilled into our new commodities with the same grace and poise our parents had.
