I loved NOVA growing up and only recently have rediscovered it. I forget why I walked away, but distinctly remember it when I was younger.
Tonight they focused on Dr. Seaborg’s nuclear theories and discoveries, namely the research conducted to find the element the atomic number 114.
Dr. Moody, who was a Seaborg protege, has come close but never quite reached 114. Citing an old Seaborg slide, that showed a ‘sea of instability’ in between the islands representing the existing known elements and the mythical place where 114 lay.
It just blew my mind to think that his protege’ some 10+ years after his death, and likely 25+ years since any new element discovery, continues to search, and very much in Seaborg’s name. Not in his name, he took care of that with Seaborgium or Sg atomic number 104.
I know that people have worked tirelessly to make great things happen in the world, and I know that for what its worth I’ve invested a lot of life, sweat, and toil into building a better life, its just sometimes I guess it helps to have that 114 to look forward to.
